People were gathering again in Bucharest’s central University Square and other cities across the country yesterday, for the fifth day of protests against President Traian Basescu, the government and its austerity policies. Although the demonstrations initially began in solidarity with health official Raed Arafat, who quit in protest against a healthcare reform law which would have partially privatised the system, they soon widened to include all of the people’s discontent with recent austerity measures and low living standards.
